What is San Diego Regional Center?

The San Diego Regional Center (SDRC) is a nonprofit that coordinates services for people with developmental difficulties within San Diego County. For children under the age of three who don’t meet developmental milestones as expected, if your insurance doesn’t cover speech-language therapy, SDRC coordinates free therapy through Early Start. North Star is an approved SDRC vendor. When communicating with SDRC, you can request that North Star be your child’s vendor (vendor number PY2169).

Why choose North Star as your SDRC vendor?

North Star’s founder and treating speech-language pathologist, Dr. Katherine McKernan, knows that parents are the experts in their children. But, when a child’s development is not as expected, it can be stressful, frustrating, and overwhelming. North Star’s unique methodology utilizes parent coaching in each in-home or online speech-language therapy session. Research suggests that parent coaching can reduce parent stress and result in faster progress for children with speech-language disorders and autism. During each appointment, parents receive coaching in strategies to support speech-language development; we provide you with a personalized home plan at the end of the appointment.

Dr. McKernan has ten years of experience as a pediatric speech and language therapist, with expertise in autism, early intervention, speech production, childhood apraxia of speech, augmentative and alternative communication, and minimally verbal communicators.
