Speech-language pathology parent coaching.
Not sure how to help your child communicate more clearly?
Parent coaching during speech-language therapy can help.
Parent coaching for speech, language, and behavior gives you the tools to confidently support your child’s development. Research evidence suggests that children whose parents receive parent coaching as part of their speech-language therapy make faster progress that children whose parents don’t. Most speech-language pathologists (SLPs) include parent education, where the SLP might speak with you for a few minutes at the end of the appointment and give you a handout with strategies to practice at home.
Parent coaching is different. During speech and language pathology parent coaching, you are included as an active participant throughout each appointment. North Star’s parent coaching includes didactic instruction, opportunities to practice with your child, self-reflection, and feedback. If your child already receives speech-language therapy with a different provider and/or you prefer to receive weekly speech and language therapy from an in-network provider, supplemental parent coaching, once or twice per month, can help you learn strategies to speed your child’s progress, reduce stress, and feel empowered in how to guide your child.

Early intervention.
Early intervention refers to therapy provided before a child’s third birthday. Many times, parents will tell me that they knew there was a problem long before they finally took the plunge to contact a speech-language therapist. If you are concerned about your child’s communication development, don’t wait and see.
Speech-language therapy for very young children should always include parent coaching. Research suggests that children whose parents receive coaching during speech-language therapy make faster progress than children whose parents don’t received coaching.

Speech production.
Speech production refers to the sounds we make when we talk. It’s normal for children to make mistakes with sounds as they speak. However, if your child is very difficult to understand, makes many errors when they talk, or continues to make mistakes after five years old, they may have a speech sound disorder. Speech therapy for speech sound disorders can help your child speak more clearly. North Star’s speech pathologists has experience treating a variety of speech sound disorders including articulation, phonology, and apraxia.

Our expert speech-language pathologists (SLPs) can support your child’s play development, language skills, and social skills.
